Where curious kids learn by building cool things

Small-group online sessions every week. No rigid curriculum, no exams. We follow the questions kids actually care about and make things along the way.

We mix concepts across

  • Science
  • Coding
  • Maths
  • Design
  • Storytelling
  • Why do onions make us cry?
  • What colour were dinosaurs?
  • How do glasses work?
  • Why is the keyboard layout so weird?
  • What's the deal with mountain goats?
  • What makes games so fun?
  • What did people in the 50s think today would look like?
  • What's the oldest instrument?
  • Carnivorous plants??
  • Why do deep sea creatures look so weird?

Show, don't tell

Every session starts with a question

Then it goes wherever the group's curiosity takes it. Pick a sticker to see how one weird question opens up a whole bunch of others.

Tap a sticker to see where it leads, or drag them around.

How it works

Casual, collaborative, and a little bit chaotic

A typical session

75 minutes, give or take a tangent

  1. 1 Wacky warm-up

Share what we learnt or built this week, then a weird question, riddle or quick challenge.

  2. 2 Follow the curiosity

Pick a question and chase it wherever it goes, breaking tricky ideas down to first principles.

  3. 3 Make and share

Build, sketch, code or experiment, then explain our thinking to the group.

Meet the facilitator

Hey, I'm Ron

Hey! I'm Ron, and I've been tutoring kids science, maths and coding every week for almost 5 years now.

I've taken the most fun, interesting and impactful learnings from those classes to shape these sessions, mixing in topics from every subject to learn new ideas.

In my day job at a Kiwi tech business I get to mix my love for coding and design with critical thinking and storytelling to solve meaningful problems. I absolutely love it.

A deep sense of curiosity and strong creativity is a superpower, even outside of school, and that is exactly what this club is all about growing :D

FAQ

Questions parents ask

Anything else, just email hello@curiousandcreative.club

Who is Curious & Creative Club for?

Any curious kid aged 12 and up. They don't need to be top of the class or obsessed with one subject. If they like asking why, they'll fit right in.

What actually happens in a session?

We start with a quick warm-up, then pick a question and follow it wherever it goes across science, coding, maths, design and storytelling. Most sessions end with everyone making something small and explaining their thinking.

Does my child need to know how to code?

Nope. Some sessions involve a bit of code, some involve sketching, experiments or building a pitch. We start from wherever each kid is.

Is this tutoring?

It's a club. We don't follow a school syllabus or prep for tests. Sessions go wherever the group's questions lead, with a focus on how to think, figure things out and communicate.

Where and when are sessions held?

Live on Zoom, once a week for 75 minutes. Each group has a regular time slot in NZ time [add current session times].

How big are the groups?

3 to 4 members per group, so everyone gets a turn to talk, ask questions and share what they made.

How much does it cost?

[$X per term] for 10 weekly sessions, paid at the start of each term. [Founding members get $Y for their first term.]

Can we try it before committing?

Every family starts with a free 15-minute chat with me and your kid to make sure it's a good fit. If the first session still isn't right, I'll refund the term in full.

Do you offer scholarships?

Yes. Each term I keep a couple of scholarship spots, free or reduced, for curious kids who'd be a great fit but where cost gets in the way. Just mention it in your application.

How do we join?

Fill in the short application, then we'll book a free 15-minute chat to make sure it's a good fit. If it is, we'll find a group and time that works.

Join the club

Groups are kept small, so there are only a handful of spots each term. Apply and I'll be in touch to say hi and find a time that works.
